Development Tools

Is a filmmaker only as good as his or her tools? Of course not. Even Steven Spielberg’s very early work, shot on 8mm home movie film, showed incredible promise. And look how he turned out!

No, terrific tools won’t help a bad craftsman do great work. But put top-flight tools in the hands of a great craftsman, and then you’ve got… well… ET, the Extraterrestrial!

We’re very careful to choose the right development tool for the job. Our preferred software tools for creating the distinctive art we put in our programs are Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. For animations we use mostly Flash.

For audio, we use SoundForge in our professional-level in-house studio.

For course development our preferred tools are Flash and our proprietary development tool i-Canvas. We use them independently for some courses, and for other courses we combine them.

Flash and i-Canvas aren’t the only course development tools, of course. Many organizations have standardized on a development tool, have invested in it, and want all of their courses created using it. That’s fine! We enjoy working with a variety of tools, and are happy to use Dreamweaver, Aspen, Lectora, what-have-you.

If you’re not certain what development tool is right for your particular situation, we’re happy to discuss that with you, point out the relative merits of each, and let you decide. That’s especially important if you want to be able to maintain the courses we create for you. Or, as many of our partners do, create some courses in-house while engaging us to do others. We’ll make sure you have a set of tools at your disposal that can make you successful.
